Kisii: Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) delegates held a consultative meeting in Kisii County, where Dr. Oburu Odinga was endorsed as the party leader. The meeting, attended by thousands of party members at Sameta grounds in Gucha Sub County, saw leaders rally support for Dr. Oburu to take over after the death of his brother Raila Amolo Odinga.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kisii Governor Simba Arati expressed that Oburu is the most suitable candidate to lead the party, claiming that his leadership would help stabilize votes on Election Day and enable the party to gain power. Arati noted that as the deputy party leader, he would have taken over after Odinga's demise but chose to step down for Oburu. He also criticized some unnamed individuals for allegedly working to undermine the party.
Meanwhile, Oburu encouraged party members to move on and build the party, emphasizing that it was endowed with grassroots representatives across the country. He stated that the party was founded on strong principles that had withstood the test of time. He mentioned that Raila left the party with broad-based arrangements extending up to 2027, the election year, and they will remain steadfast as they prepare to negotiate with partners, including UDA.
Lastly, Governor Gladys Wanga of Homabay County announced that the party will maintain a broad-based government and ensure negotiations are endorsed. Following nationwide consultations, Oburu will be officially endorsed as party leader during the National Delegates Conference.
