Nyeri: Nyeri County Women Representative, Rahab Mukami, has donated a substantial amount of foodstuffs to Wandumbi Special School, a centre for children with disabilities in Nyeri County.

According to Kenya News Agency, the donation, which included rice, maize flour, beans, cooking oil, and sugar, was aimed at supporting the school in its mission to provide for the nutritional needs of its students. During the ceremony held at the school grounds yesterday, attended by school officials, teachers, and students, Mukami expressed her commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable groups in the county. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that children with disabilities receive the best care and attention, not only in terms of education but also in their daily needs.

Mukami explained that the donation was part of her broader initiative to support institutions that cater to marginalised communities, particularly those that face multiple challenges. ‘It is crucial that we look out for the most vulnerable members of our society, especially children with disabilities who often face neglect and isolation,’ said Mukami. ‘By contributing food and other essential resources, we hope to ease some of the burdens that these institutions face in their quest to provide quality care.’

Wandumbi Special School, which caters to students with physical and mental disabilities, has faced significant challenges in providing adequate food and resources due to limited funding. John Wachira, the School Principal, said that ‘this donation will go a long way in ensuring that our students have enough to eat, which is critical to their health and academic progress.’

In addition to the food donations, Mukami promised to continue working with the school to address other needs, including improving infrastructure and providing teaching materials. She called on other well-wishers and government agencies to join in supporting schools that cater to children with disabilities, ensuring that these students have equal opportunities for growth and development.

Parents expressed their gratitude, noting that the donation had come at a time when many families were struggling to meet basic needs. ‘We are very thankful to the Women Representative for thinking of our children and providing for them in such a thoughtful way,’ said Muthoni, a parent.

Mukami’s visit to Wandumbi Special School highlighted her ongoing efforts to champion social welfare initiatives that benefit the most vulnerable members of society, ensuring that no one is left behind.
