Nyeri Deputy Governor Urges Journalists to Uphold Professional Ethics

NYERI – In a move to emphasize the importance of journalistic integrity, the Deputy Governor of Nyeri, David Kinanie, addressed local media professionals at the inauguration of the Nyeri Press Club, held at the White Rhino Hotel.

According to Kenya News Agency, the event marked a significant step for journalism in the region, where he urged the press to adhere strictly to their professional ethics. He highlighted the crucial role journalists play in society as informants, watchdogs, and truth-seekers, underscoring their responsibility to maintain transparency and accountability. Kinanie acknowledged the establishment of the Nyeri Press Club as a commitment to these values, encouraging its members to champion the causes of the underrepresented and ensure that their voices are heard.

In his address, the Deputy Governor also drew parallels between the media and other vital societal institutions, such as churches and healthcare facilities, portraying the media as a refuge for the vulnerable. He envisioned the press club not just as a venue but as a sanctuary for those dedicated to leveraging information for societal improvement.

The event also featured insights from Victor Bwire, the Media Council of Kenya’s Director for Media Training and Development, who stressed the need for journalists to broaden their skill sets. He advocated for continuous learning in areas beyond journalism, such as first aid and financial literacy, to enhance their adaptability and effectiveness in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, Bwire encouraged media professionals to embrace technological advancements and social media to diversify their sources of income and strengthen their professional presence. He cited examples of journalists who have successfully leveraged digital platforms for broader engagement and financial stability.

To support this vision, Karanja Jackson, Regional Coordinator for the Media Council of Kenya, announced plans to establish digital centers offering resources like computers and free Wi-Fi, facilitating a conducive working environment for journalists and training opportunities for interns.

The ceremony concluded with the introduction of the Nyeri Press Club’s interim officials, indicating a forward step in fostering a collaborative and ethical journalistic community in Nyeri.
