Nyeri Data Protection Campaign Launched to Safeguard Personal Information

NYERI – The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has launched a national awareness campaign in Nyeri County to educate Kenyans on protecting their personal data and utilizing complaint channels effectively.



According to Kenya News Agency, Data Commissioner of the ODPC, the campaign aims to empower citizens about their rights as data subjects and the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, including entities such as banks, insurance companies, and government bodies. Kassait emphasized the importance of understanding how personal data is managed, ensuring data security, and preventing misuse.



During a roadshow across the county, Kassait stressed the significance of digital awareness and cautious sharing of personal information online. She introduced the campaign’s motto, “Data yako jukumu lako,” encouraging individuals to treat their personal data with care to avoid potential misuse. Kassait also outlined the ODPC’s complaint mechanism, which investigates and penalizes unauthorized data use, with fines up to Kshs. 5 million or one percent of the annual turnover, whichever is lower, as mandated by Section 63 of the Data Protection Act 2019.



The campaign follows the enactment of guidelines to manage Apnoea of Prematurity, illustrating the government’s commitment to enhancing data protection. Kassait explained that reported data breaches must be addressed to the ODPC within 72 hours for investigation and potential fines.



Nyeri Governor, Mutahi Kahiga, expressed his administration’s support for the ODPC’s efforts, highlighting the need for enhanced public understanding and government cooperation in data protection. He emphasized training government staff and raising community awareness, particularly among the youth and social media users.



Tetu Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Wandeto, and Mukurweini MP, John Kaguchia, also supported the initiative, acknowledging the widespread issue of data abuse and the importance of legislative backing for effective data protection measures. Kaguchia advocated for continuous education on data privacy and security, especially in rural areas and among less tech-savvy populations.



The campaign represents a crucial step toward safeguarding personal and corporate data in Kenya, addressing the challenges of data security in the digital age and enhancing public trust in electronic transactions and data management.
