Nyeri County Urged To Establish Fire Station In Mweiga

Mweiga: Residents of Mweiga town in Nyeri County have asked the county government to station a fire engine in town to ensure faster response during fire emergencies. This is following a family's devastating loss after a fire razed their home while they were attending a church service.

According to Kenya News Agency, the afternoon blaze is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault that triggered a gas explosion. The fire destroyed the entire house and the family's belongings, including a motorbike valued at hundreds of thousands of shillings. Alice Kiboi, a witness, recounted how they heard screams for help on their way home from church, only to find first responders struggling to contain the fire.

The residents argue that the fire could have been managed and property saved had a fire engine been available in Mweiga. The delay was attributed to the wait for firefighters dispatched from Nyeri town, which took about 20 minutes. Ms. Kiboi emphasized the urgent need for a fire engine in Mweiga to prevent such losses in the future.

Joseph Wanjere, the homeowner affected by the incident, expressed his despair. He was informed of the fire by his niece while still in church. The fire has severely impacted his family, leaving them without a home or possessions just as his children were preparing to return to school.

Wanjere shared the dire circumstances his family now faces, with his children having lost their school uniforms and learning materials. He expressed uncertainty about how to begin rebuilding their lives.

Simon Kabiru, the area Assistant Chief, confirmed the incident and stated that police have begun investigations to determine the fire's cause. He also called on well-wishers to assist the family with essentials such as food, clothing, temporary shelter, and educational support for the children.
