Nyeri County Residents Call for Fire Station in Mweiga After Devastating Blaze

Nyeri: Residents of Mweiga town in Nyeri County have asked the county government to station a fire engine in town to ensure faster response during fire emergencies. This plea comes in the wake of a destructive fire that left a family homeless.

According to Kenya News Agency, the fire erupted on Sunday afternoon while the family was attending a church service. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault that triggered a gas explosion, consumed the entire house along with the family's possessions, including a motorbike worth hundreds of thousands of shillings.

Eyewitness Alice Kiboi recounted, "We were heading home from church when we heard loud screams for help. When we arrived at the scene, we found the first responders trying to put out the fire and salvage whatever they could but nothing could be saved." The residents believe a quicker response could have mitigated the damage and are urging the county government to station a fire engine in Mweiga to prevent future tragedies.

Joseph Wanjere, the affected homeowner, was informed of the incident by his niece during the church service. The fire has left his children without school necessities just as the new academic year begins. "We have lost everything. We have no place to sleep, no food, nothing. The only possession we have is the clothes on our backs," Wanjere lamented. He further expressed concern for his three children, who have lost their school uniforms and learning materials.

Simon Kabiru, the area Assistant Chief, confirmed the incident and announced that police investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. He also urged well-wishers to assist the family with essentials such as food, clothing, and temporary shelter, as well as support for the children's education. "Whatever you can spare for this family is highly welcome so that they will be able to get back on their feet," said Kabiru.
