Nyanza Region Set to Benefit from Multibillion Development Projects

Nyanza, Kenya – Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa has expressed optimism about the socio-economic benefits the local residents will gain from the development projects initiated by President William Ruto’s administration. This optimism was shared during a breakfast show at a local radio station, where she discussed the impact of these projects in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, these projects are expected to provide employment opportunities for youth, women, and adults in the region. Mworoa highlighted the visit of President Ruto to the region and the subsequent influx of development projects.

Among the key projects mentioned was the Sh.3 billion Kabonyo Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Centre in Kisumu County, which aims to boost the Blue Economy ventures in Lake Victoria. The Koru-Soin dam project, worth Sh.19.8 billion and expected to complete in 2027, will address issues like flooding, irrigation, hydropower generation, and water supply in Kisumu and Kericho Counties.

Siaya County will benefit from a new level four hospital in Ugenya and the construction of a Digital Laboratory at Mutumbu Technical Training Institute, enhancing local healthcare and digital skills training. The upgrading of the 27-km Bondo-Uyawi-Liunda road is anticipated to improve transportation and development in the area.

Mworoa also pointed out the commissioning of the 53-km Mfangano Island Ring road and the 53-km Mbita-Sindo-Kiabuya-Sori road in Magunga Homa Bay, along with the construction and rehabilitation of Piers in Kendu Bay, Mbita, Asembo Bay, and Homa Bay.

To improve housing, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and Homabay County government have agreed to construct 400 affordable houses on an 11-acre land. Kuria East residents in Migori County will benefit from the Last Mile Water connectivity project in Kegonga, and the Mabera Affordable Housing Programme in Kuria West.

A significant boost is expected for the sugarcane industry following the Cabinet’s approval of a Sh.117 billion bailout for six state-owned sugar factories, potentially reviving industries like South Nyanza Sugar (SONY), Nzoia Sugar, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Miwani, and Mumias.

Additionally, Nyamira County will see the launch of the Sironga Affordable Housing Project, while Kisii County benefits from the Kisii Town Water Supply Project and the Kegati Water Treatment Plant expansion. Infrastructure improvements in Kisii County include the commissioning of several roads.

Mworoa urged regional leaders to collaborate for enhanced stability and development, focusing on education, health, and security sectors.
