Nyamira: In an effort to bolster security in Nyamira County, residents are being encouraged to report any security incidents to their nearest police stations or authorities. This call for vigilance aims to facilitate prompt assistance from security officers in addressing various security concerns.

According to Kenya News Agency, County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha highlighted a challenge in the law enforcement process, noting the residents’ reluctance to testify against arrested criminals. “We have arrested ten profiled criminals, mostly ex-convicts released after the president’s amnesty directive. However, the lack of willingness among residents to testify in court, often due to fear of retaliation, hampers our efforts in legal processing,” Kyatha explained.

He detailed the security concerns facing the county, including late-night attacks, theft, assault, and rape targeting traders and businesspeople. A particularly severe incident occurred at Nyakenimo coffee society in Nyamira North Sub County, where a significant amount of coffee berries was stolen, and one person was fatally axed.

The County Commissioner assured that the county security team has implemented stringent measures to contain the worsening security situation. He noted an increase in crimes related to drug abuse, substance misuse, and gambling among the youth and emphasized that these will be addressed decisively.

“We are working closely with administrative and security agencies to eradicate these criminal activities. I urge the public to cooperate and provide information on individuals involved in criminal activities, including the brewing and sale of illicit brews,” Kyatha appealed. He also advised coffee societies to seek enhanced armed security during large-scale coffee berry drying to prevent theft.

Kyatha also cautioned residents to celebrate responsibly during the festive season, particularly warning against drunk driving to avoid accidents and loss of lives. He advised parents to monitor their children’s activities closely to prevent overindulgence and potential tragedies.
