Nyahururu Seniors Embrace Volleyball for Fitness and Community

NYAHURURU — In Nyahururu, a town renowned for its scenic landscapes, local seniors have found a new passion in volleyball, embracing the sport as a way to stay active and connect with their community. This initiative, spearheaded by local volleyball coach Fred Osongo, has grown significantly since its inception two years ago.

According to Kenya News Agency, the volleyball team started with just a few players but has now expanded to 40 members. The primary motivation for starting the team was to provide a physical activity that was accessible after work, particularly appealing to those in physically demanding jobs like motorbike taxi services. “Initially, there was a perception that volleyball was only for the young. Many men were hesitant to join, but now we’ve grown to forty members, including many seniors,” Osongo explained.

The health benefits of the sport have been significant for the players. Osongo highlighted the importance of volleyball in combating health issues related to excessive weight, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Additionally, playing volleyball has educated participants about the rules and skills involved in the sport, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment.

Brian, a member of the volleyball team, emphasized the sport’s suitability for older adults due to its low physical strain. “Volleyball doesn’t require as much strength as soccer, making it ideal for our age group. It also brings us together, fostering camaraderie and support networks that are invaluable,” he said.

The community’s growing interest in volleyball underscores the need for greater recognition of the sport’s benefits, particularly among older populations. Women are also encouraged to participate more actively, enriching their skills and utilizing the sport as a means to maintain fitness.
