Nyahururu: A section of nurses from Nyahururu, Nyandarua County, have lauded the ongoing International Nurses Week, citing it as an avenue to advocate and sensitize the public on the immense contribution of nurses in health care promotion. While speaking at ACK Christ the King Cathedral, Nyahururu, during a thanksgiving event, Ms. Dorcas Njuguna, who spoke on behalf of the team, emphasized that Nurses Week recognizes the impact nurses and midwives have on individuals and communities in health promotion, disease prevention, and delivery of community health care.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ms. Njuguna also highlighted that the week provides an avenue to advocate for the life and well-being of nurses and midwives. She remarked, “This is the week we celebrate the nurses as well as advocate for their lives and well-being to ensure they have the resources and support they need to provide quality health care.” Ms. Njuguna also noted that the week serves to raise awareness about the challenges facing the nursin
g profession and underscores the need for a strong nursing workforce.
Furthermore, Ms. Njuguna mentioned that International Nurses Week honors Florence Nightingale, an English social reformer born on May 12, 1820, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Provost Ven. John Ngenye appreciated the nurses for their contribution to society in providing health care, adding that their services have a significant impact. Ven. Ngenye encouraged the nurses to take courage and continue serving the community despite the challenges they encounter in their line of duty.
He also encouraged them to dedicate themselves and their services to God for protection, noting the risky nature of their work as they interact with patients suffering from various ailments. During Nurses Week, the nurses are engaging in various activities, including acts of mercy such as visiting institutions like prisons, as they plan to celebrate the climax of the week on Friday.
