Nyandarua: Nurses’ input is set to become a crucial part of designing new health facilities in Nyandarua County, as announced by Health Executive Juliana Syoweu Tsinanga. Tsinanga emphasized that nurses, due to their extensive time spent in these facilities, have valuable insights into the practical aspects of design, such as room and door sizes and the placement of sinks.

According to Kenya News Agency, Tsinanga made these remarks during the launch of the County International Nurses Week celebrations at the Ol Joroorok ACK church compound. She highlighted her commitment to prioritizing the nursing agenda since assuming office, focusing on addressing workforce shortages and improving working conditions for nurses. Tsinanga acknowledged the vital role nurses and midwives play in fostering healthier communities and strengthening health systems.

The Health Executive revealed that a total of 64 nurses have been recruited in the past year to enhance the nurse-patient ratio and bolster health services in Nyandarua County. This includes 30 new nurses this year and 34 from the previous year. Tsinanga also highlighted ongoing efforts to promote nurses who have been in the same job group for extended periods. In 2024, 100 nurses were promoted, and more promotions are planned, contingent on meeting the required criteria.

Tsinanga reiterated the significance of the 465 nurses currently serving in Nyandarua, describing them as a substantial resource in the county’s mission to promote healthy lives and strengthen the economy. Julius Ng’ambi, the Chief Officer in the department, noted that all applications for promotion have been processed, with the board expected to issue letters soon. Health department workers represent a significant portion of the county staff who receive promotions each year.

James Maina, the organizing secretary of the Kenya Union of Nurses Nyandarua chapter, expressed gratitude towards the County government for agreeing to provide two buses to transport delegates to the national nurses’ week celebrations in Migori.
