Northern fixtures postponed due to lack of stadiums

Fixtures for rounds two and three of the Debmarine Namibia Premiership scheduled for Rundu and Otjiwarongo have been postponed indefinitely due to a lack of available stadiums.

The 2023/24 Debmarine Namibia Premiership season commenced on 16 September 2023 with action in Rundu, Keetmanshop, Okahandja, Swakopmund, Gobabis and Windhoek.

The second and third rounds of the country’s top-flight league will now take place in Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, and Okahandja, following the announced postponements in the other towns.

Eeshoke Chula Chula, a recently promoted team in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership, won their first match against Mighty Gunners at the Oshakati Stadium and were scheduled to play Julinho Sporting in Rundu on Saturday, followed by a match against Life Fighter in Otjiwarongo on Sunday. However, due to the Governor’s Cup, school competitions and church festivities, the Rundu Sports Stadium, Oshakati Independence Stadium and Mokati Stadium were all unavailable, forcing the postponement.

Mighty Gu
nners, who were supposed to travel to Rundu on Sunday, will also not be playing this weekend.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Mabos Vries, the league’s administrator, stated that they had initially booked the Oshakati Independence Stadium for the second and third-round fixtures. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the fixtures had to be postponed.

‘We were aware that the Governor’s Cup was scheduled to take place at the Rundu sports stadium. Therefore, we coordinated with Julinho and Chula Chula to host their match in Oshakati, and both teams agreed. However, we received information later that the school event, which was planned to take place over the weekend at the stadium, was still ongoing. As a result, we had no choice but to postpone the matches.,’ said Vries.

He added that they are hopeful and confident that matches scheduled for the weekend in other towns will be full of excitement.

‘Mighty Gunners will play a match on Friday because the Mokati Stadium has been booked for a church even
t on Saturday. It wouldn’t have been cost-effective for Chula Chula to travel back and forth for just one match on Sunday, especially since they will be playing there again soon.,’ he said.
