Oshikoto: The Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) has commenced its 'Takamisa' electricity safety awareness and public education campaign at schools across the Oshikoto Region. The initiative, which began on Thursday, aims to prevent electrical incidents, particularly among school children. According to Namibia Press Agency, the campaign was officially launched in May 2025 in Nkurenkuru under the theme 'Caring for Employees, Caring for the Community, Zero Harm.' Nored spokesperson Simon Lukas explained that the campaign's objective is to achieve 'zero harm' by engaging and educating learners to reduce electrical injuries and accidents. Lukas emphasized the importance of targeting schools, as many victims of electrical accidents are school-going children. He advised learners to avoid fallen power lines and refrain from climbing any electrical infrastructure, including trees with branches that lean on electrical wires. He also cautioned against trimming such tree branches. Additionally, Lukas w arned learners against throwing wires onto active electricity lines to prevent unplanned power interruptions and advised against inserting fingers, dry tree branches, or metallic objects into electrical plugs. Linekeela Kauhangenge, a safety, health, and environmental officer at Nored, provided safety tips for dealing with electrical emergencies. She instructed learners to use a dry tree branch to remove a friend's hand from an electricity line if they are being electrocuted, rather than touching them directly. The campaign will continue with visits to four more primary schools in the region before 23 February 2026.
