Nkurenkuru: Residents of Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region have welcomed the government's decision to decentralise Namibia's Independence Day celebrations across all 14 regions, saying it will enhance participation, recognition, and historical awareness.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the announcement was made on 03 March 2026 by Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus, confirming that the 2026 celebrations will be held nationwide simultaneously on 21 March. The new approach marks a move away from hosting the event in a single town to a decentralised national format. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will host the official ceremony at State House in Windhoek.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, 24-year-old Nkurenkuru resident Silva Faustinus said the regional format allows greater youth participation in an event that was previously experienced mainly through television broadcasts. "This will enable the youth and the younger ones to celebrate independence together in our respective regions. We used to just watch the event on television. This will also allow us to meet and hear from our leaders about Namibia's struggle before independence," he said.
Another resident, Liveve Sapira, said holding the celebrations on the actual date restores the significance of the occasion. "People are tired of belated commemorations. It will be good if people get to celebrate at once and together, even though it is in every region," he said, adding that residents appreciate the decision.
International University of Management (IUM) Nkurenkuru campus director Hosian Hitanwa said the approach strengthens national identity while improving public understanding of the country's history. "It is a very good decision, because it will make our people feel recognised and it will be good for our own knowledge," he said.
Hitanwa added that the decentralised format presents an opportunity to educate young people about the meaning of independence and its relevance to present-day freedoms. "Our youth need to be sensitised and made to understand why we are celebrating. It is because of independence that we are now free to express ourselves and participate in economic development and social welfare," he said.
