Nkurenkuru: The sixth Nkurenkuru Expo was officially opened on Wednesday by the Vice Chairperson of the National Council, Victoria Mbawo Kauma, on behalf of former President and expo patron, Hifikepunye Pohamba. Pohamba, in his keynote address, emphasised that the expo is more than a traditional fair or market. ‘It is a manifestation of the hard work, creativity, perseverance and resolve of the people of Kavango West,’ he said.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the former president stated that the expo serves as a unique platform where businesses from all sectors can connect, collaborate, and discover new opportunities for growth. ‘The event showcases the region’s rich agricultural products, including mahangu, maize and sweet potatoes, alongside traditional handcrafts and innovative services from local entrepreneurs.’

He further highlighted the expo’s significant role in stimulating local economic development by creating markets for businesses to sell their products and establish valuable partnerships with new clients. ‘The event provides employment and income opportunities for numerous families throughout the community, strengthening their ability to support their children’s education and improve living standards.’

The expo also serves to strengthen regional cooperation by attracting participants from across the country and neighbouring regions, fostering collaboration and shared understanding between communities, Pohamba added. The former president called upon all stakeholders, including businesses, financial institutions, and community leaders, to view the expo as a key driver of regional development.

In his remarks, Nkurenkuru Mayor Jafet Markus Muti explained that the focus of this year’s expo is highlighting the entrepreneurial contributions of women and young people, who often face greater challenges in accessing business resources. He said the event provides a crucial platform for these groups to grow their businesses, connect with markets, and develop essential skills. ‘Women and young people are the innovators, leaders, and job creators of tomorrow,’ Muti noted, emphasising their indispensable role in regional development.

The expo is positioned not just as an annual event, but as part of a long-term strategy for sustained economic growth in Kavango West and Namibia as a whole, said Muti. The Nkurenkuru Expo ends on Sunday.
