Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has affirmed its ongoing commitment to intensify law enforcement measures against organized terrorist and criminal groups in Ethiopia’s capital. This pledge was announced following a recent review of intelligence operations in Addis Ababa and its adjacent regions.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, a comprehensive report was presented and discussed today at a consultative forum attended by key figures including Chief of Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, NISS Director-General Redwan Hussein, and senior officials from federal and regional security and judicial institutions. The discussions highlighted significant progress in disrupting the activities of anti-peace elements and other illegal operations through coordinated efforts among various security agencies.
The forum detailed the dismantlement of a network operated by the extremist group Fano, which had relocated from the Amhara region to Addis Ababa. Despite attempts to destabilize the city, the group was neutralized by the National Defense Force. Similarly, actions against the Shene terrorist group in the Oromia region have reportedly inflicted substantial setbacks on the group, disrupting its operations and resulting in considerable losses.
The statement also emphasized the successful thwarting of several planned criminal activities in the capital, including robbery and kidnapping, through vigilant surveillance and coordinated operations by security forces. Over 174 suspects have been detained, with investigations ongoing regarding their involvement with incendiary explosives and various weaponry.
NISS highlighted additional measures targeting corruption and collusion within key sectors such as revenue and customs, banking, the judiciary, and government offices. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to root out corruption and ensure public sector integrity.
Field Marshal Birhanu Jula remarked on the efficacy of the joint security operations in restoring relative peace and allowing citizens to resume normal activities. He assured that the security forces would continue to enhance their strategies and address any existing shortcomings to improve overall performance.
Director-General Redwan Hussein reiterated the commitment to maintain and increase the effectiveness of operations against organized crime and terrorism. He emphasized the importance of continuous self-assessment by security institutions to prevent public grievances and ensure alignment with community needs. Hussein also highlighted the value of ongoing forums to share experiences and strategies among security and intelligence officials, ensuring robust national security and support from the public.
