Windhoek: Nine individuals who once lived in corridor areas of the Omaheke Region have received land allotments, marking a significant development in their quest for stable housing. Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Ingenesia Zaamwani, presented the allotment letters in a ceremony held in Windhoek, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of generational farm workers previously residing in informal settlements.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the land allocation follows the government’s acquisition of Farm Wiums Rus and Farm Fiesta, which span more than 11,000 hectares and were purchased for N.dollars 28 million. Minister Zaamwani emphasized the importance of dialogue between farm owners and workers to prevent evictions and foster sustainable solutions that respect the dignity of workers while also considering the rights of landowners.

In her address, Zaamwani urged applicants for resettlement to submit accurate information to maintain the integrity of the process. She encouraged the new landowners to use their allotments productively and sustainably, reinforcing the transformative potential of this opportunity.

Nikolaas Mootu, a resident of Okorukambe Constituency, expressed gratitude for the resettlement after a lengthy three-decade effort. Mootu remarked on the positive changes occurring under new leadership, expressing appreciation for the government’s responsiveness and the minister’s role.

Zaamwani also called upon traditional leaders and regional officials to ensure transparency in the beneficiary selection process. She stressed that all land allocations would undergo vetting to prevent corruption, favouritism, and tribalism, ensuring a fair and equitable distribution of resources.
