Niger’s Magistrates Strike to Uphold Judicial Independence

NIAMEY, Niger – Magistrates in Niger have announced a three-day strike from July 1 to 3.

According to Burkina Information Agency, The union is protesting against the encroachment of executive power into judicial affairs. The strike follows recent events where the military hierarchy released two police officers from custody, previously accused of assaulting a magistrate, without ensuring minimum judicial service. Additionally, SAMAN highlighted a case of undue interference by a prefect in a murder investigation. Despite these tensions, the union’s executive office remains open to dialogue, seeking to resolve these conflicts amicably.
