NIAMEY – Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, alongside key ministers, embarked on a diplomatic tour on Monday, with planned visits to Russia, Iran, Serbia, and Turkey. This tour, as reported by Mondafrique citing a government source, aims to diversify Niger’s international partnerships in various sectors.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the new Nigerien authorities are seeking to expand collaborations in defense, agri-food, energy, oil, and health equipment. This move indicates a strategic shift in Niger’s foreign policy and international relations.

The tour follows significant political events in Niger. On July 26, a faction of the Presidential Guard mutinied, leading to the announcement of the dismissal of President Mohamed Bazoum. In response, the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland, headed by Presidential Guard Commander Abdourahamane Tchiani, was established to govern the nation.

Further altering the geopolitical landscape, on September 24, 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the withdrawal of France’s ambassador and several diplomats from Niamey. This decision came at Niger’s request, following the country’s denunciation of major agreements with France.

Approximately 1,400 French troops, stationed in Niger as part of a counter-terrorism effort, departed the country by December 22. The French military presence included about 1,000 soldiers in the capital and roughly 400 in the western region.

Under the leadership of General Tiani since July 2024, Niger has pursued a policy focused on self-reliance and regional cooperation within the Alliance of Sahel States to combat terrorism and safeguard its sovereignty. The current diplomatic tour marks a significant step in Niger’s efforts to forge new strategic partnerships.
