ABUJA— The murder of a 20-year-old woman in Nigeria has forced the lower chamber of parliament to declare a national emergency on ritual killings.

A deputy Minority leader Toby Okechukwu whiles making submissions on the matter laid blame on Nollywood films that had story lines that feature juju (ritual killing).

“Ritual killing had become a predominant theme in most homemade movies which if not checked, our younger generation may begin to view it as an acceptable norm,” he said.

The BBC Africa LIVE page in a report stated that, the film licencing board has been directed to ban all productions that have ritual killings as part of the plot.

It is widely believed that the murder of the lady that took place earlier this month was for ritual purposes.

Nigeria’s booming film industry has a deep reverence for stories that portray culture with quite a number of them bordering on the subject of ritual murders and black magic or juju-themed productions.

Representatives of the film industry have yet to comment on the development.
