Niamey: The National Communication Observatory (ONC) announced the suspension of nine French media outlets in Niger, aiming to preserve peace, social cohesion, and the stability of the institutions within the member countries of the AES, as well as to maintain the morale of the defense and security forces (FDS).
According to Burkina Information Agency, this decision, signed on May 8, 2026, targets France 24, RFI, France Afrique Media, LSI Africa, AFP, TV5 Monde, TFI Info, Jeune Afrique, and Mediapart. The Nigerien regulator's press release explained that the suspension follows "the repeated dissemination of content and media treatment likely to seriously jeopardize public order, social cohesion, the stability of the republican institutions of the member countries of the ESA, as well as the morale of the Defense and Security Forces engaged in the defense of our countries."
The ONC highlighted the necessity for the press to exercise freedom within the bounds of the Republic's laws, professional ethics, and national interests amid the current security challenges and information threats. The source continues that the ONC calls on all national and international media, digital actors, and opinion leaders to exhibit responsibility, professionalism, and restraint in addressing issues related to security, social peace, and national unity. The ONC also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a responsible, professional media landscape that respects national sovereignty.
