NGO Urges Establishment of More Rescue Centres for Reformed Street Children in Kisii

Kisii: A faith-based community organisation dedicated to reforming street children in Kisii town is calling on well-wishers and the Kisii County government to establish additional rescue centres to prevent reformed children from reverting to street life.

According to Kenya News Agency, officials from the Kingdom Child organization highlighted the challenges faced by children in rehabilitation centers and schools during school holidays, as they lack a stable home environment. This often results in reversing the progress these children make after undergoing rehabilitation.

During a mentorship program for street children at the Kisii town Pentecostal Assemblies of God church, approximately 500 members of street families received a free lunch and were provided with life skills training to help them navigate the challenges that arise during school holidays.

Local Pastor Francis Osero noted that the annual event, held since the organization's inception in 2012, supports children through feeding, mentorship, rehabilitation, and education. He emphasized that the initiative demonstrates the love and support of church members and well-wishers, who contribute food, clothing, and household goods to assist the less privileged in society.

Kingdom Child CBO Coordinator Moturi Byron mentioned that at least eight children in the program are currently attending school, while others are in rehabilitation centers. He appealed to Governor Simba Arati to offer a safe house for rehabilitated street children who are still pursuing their studies during school breaks. Byron also pointed out that some children run away from school as they are not yet fully reformed.
