The body of a newborn baby boy was allegedly found in a freezer in the Onawa area of Oshakati on Tuesday.
Oshana Community Affairs Officer, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, confirmed this on Wednesday, saying the discovery was made during the morning hours.
A 34-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the matter and is under police guard at the Oshakati State Hospital.
According to Aiyambo, the suspect was allegedly eight months pregnant and gave birth at home, but concealed the birth.
“The suspect did not know her expected date of delivery,” he said.
Aiyambo stated that the suspect allegedly told the police she gave birth around 20h00 on 13 September and when she realised that the baby was dead, she washed the body and wrapped it in black plastic bags before placing it in the household freezer, where it was eventually discovered.
He added that the placenta and umbilical cord were also found in a separate plastic bag in the freezer.
Additionally, Aiyambo said the police discovered a pair of scissors that was used to cut the umbilical cord.
He stated that all physical material evidence was properly documented, labelled and preserved.
Police investigation into the matter continues.
