GOBABIS: The newly completed 170-kilometre road connecting the Aminuis Constituency to Gobabis has been officially opened by President Nangolo Mbumba, marking a significant advancement in infrastructure within the Omaheke Region. This key segment of Main Road 91, which extends a total of 239 kilometres, is expected to enhance economic activities by linking the Omaheke and Hardap regions and connecting to the Trans-Kalahari Highway, thus facilitating a route from Walvis Bay to South Africa via Botswana.

According to Namibia Press Agency, President Mbumba highlighted the strategic importance of the Gobabis-Aminuis road for Namibia’s economic sectors, including tourism, agriculture, and mining, during the commissioning ceremony. He emphasized that the new road will allow tourists unprecedented access to regional attractions like the Chief Hosea Kutako Memorial Museum and Homestead Shrine, boosting local tourism and enhancing community pride through increased appreciation of the Omaheke Region’s cultural heritag

Mbumba also addressed the challenges faced by rural communities due to inadequate road infrastructure, noting that this has historically restricted access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and markets, as well as impeding family connections. “The completion of this road not only eliminates these barriers but also contributes to a more inclusive and connected Namibia,” he said.

The president underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing service delivery and infrastructure development, viewing the road as a catalyst for reducing transportation costs and stimulating local economies by providing access to markets and services. The construction project engaged around 21 SMEs, offering them opportunities to contribute skills and gain valuable experience.

Mbumba extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Roads Authority, contractors, and local communities for their dedication and hard work, stating, “Together, you have created a road that is not just
functional and durable but is able to support growth for years to come. I commend each of you for your dedication which is positively affecting the lives of our people.”
