ADDIS ABABA: The Abbay Basin Administration Office has established the Abbay Basin Implementation Platform, in collaboration with stakeholders from the Oromia, Amhara, and Benishangul-Gumuz regional states.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, head of the Abbay Basin Administration Office, the platform is part of a 20-year plan developed with various stakeholders and universities to manage the basin’s resources sustainably. The plan addresses socio-economic impacts, water resource management, and environmental risks, aiming to balance the needs of upstream and downstream areas and various administrative regions.
Mengistu emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to water management in the basin, which represents a significant portion of the country’s hydropower and agricultural potential. The Memorandum of Understandings signed today seeks to enhance coordination among the regional states to implement the basin management plan effectively.
