New Governor Promises to Tackle Quadruple Security, Humanitarian, Social and Economic Challenges

Dori: The new governor of the Sahel region, Mr. Abdoul Karim Zongo, promised, during his official installation, to tackle the quadruple security, humanitarian, social, and economic challenges facing this part of Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Mr. Abdoul Karim Zongo was officially installed in Dori by the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovations, Mr. Aljima Thiombiano, in the presence of government officials and a large crowd. The installation took place on Monday, January 13, 2025, and followed his appointment by the Council of Ministers on December 5, 2024. Prior to this position, Mr. Zongo served as the Secretary General of the Dori Governorate, succeeding Colonel Fabien Rodolphe Sorgho, who has been assigned to new duties.

Mr. Zongo expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by national authorities and pledged to address the challenges of governance in the Sahel region. His primary focus will be on security, emphasizing the importance of cohesion between the defense and security forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP).

In addressing humanitarian issues, Mr. Zongo promised humane treatment for the region’s challenges. He also highlighted plans to collaborate with technical and financial partners to provide training and installation kits to women and young people, aiming to address the social challenges in the Sahel.

Economic revival is also on Mr. Zongo’s agenda, with a focus on resolving the blockade of national road No. 3, a significant barrier to the region’s economic development. He called for support and assistance from the FDS, VDP, technical services, notables, civil society organizations, and technical and financial partners, receiving positive responses from these groups.

Colonel Parat© Fabien Rodolphe Sorgho, Mr. Zongo’s predecessor, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure as governor. He has been appointed as defense attach© to the permanent mission of Burkina Faso in New York.

During the installation, Mr. Aljima Thiombiano urged Mr. Zongo to focus on achieving the objectives set by President Captain Ibrahim Traor© in the action plan for the stabilization and development of Burkina Faso. These objectives include combating terrorism, restoring state authority, achieving administrative unity, ensuring administrative support to local authorities, and strengthening relations with the border regions of Niger and Mali.
