Nearly 350 Protesters Detained Across Turkey Following Istanbul Mayor’s Arrest

Istanbul: Almost 350 people were detained in Turkey after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu sparked protests on Friday, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Saturday. On Wednesday, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that Imamoglu was detained on charges of corruption and bribery. The mayor's detention led to large-scale protests despite tight security measures and a ban on rallies in the city.

According to Namibia Press Agency, a total of 343 suspects were detained during protests in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Antalya, Canakkale, Eskisehir, Konya, and Edirne. Yerlikaya commented on the situation via X, emphasizing that those who attempt to disrupt public order and threaten the stability and security of the country will not be given any opportunity to do so.

The protests erupted in response to Imamoglu's detention, highlighting the tension between the government and opposition supporters. The widespread detentions underscore the government's intent to maintain control and prevent any potential unrest. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor the developments closely.
