Trans Nzoia: Twenty counties are set to receive a donation of cryogenic equipment from the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD). The donation by the council, which comes as a result of collaboration with other stakeholders, marks a milestone in the fight against skin cancer for Persons with Albinism (PWAs).
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative was highlighted during a handover event at Kitale Sub County Hospital, where Alex Munyere, Senior Disability Officer in charge of Rehabilitation and Habitation at NCPWD, emphasized the significance of providing access to in-office procedures for skin cancer treatment and prevention. This effort aims to improve access to dermatological services for PWAs by offering free services.
Munyere stated that the distribution of this equipment aligns with the Council’s commitment to ensuring a decent life for persons with disabilities and supports the government’s program for quality healthcare access. During the Financial Year 2024/2025, the council procured 20 cryogenic units, each costing Shs 200,000, for distribution across facilities in 20 counties.
The counties set to benefit include Kakamega, Kajiado, Kiambu, Wajir, Murang’a, Bungoma, Isiolo, Nyamira, Vihiga, Trans Nzoia, Meru, Homabay, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Mandera, Turkana, Nandi, and Kwale. Eligible facilities must have a structured governing body, management committee, and personnel to manage the equipment.
Upon receiving the equipment, facilities are required to maintain a comprehensive register of PWA beneficiaries and demonstrate efficient use of the equipment. Regular monitoring and evaluation will be conducted by NCPWD and the Ministry of Health.
Munyere urged PWAs to utilize these initiatives and seek assistance, aligning with the Kenya 2010 Constitution, Persons’ with Disabilities Act No. 14 of 2003, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Kitale Sub County Hospital Chief Administrative Officer Joanes Nyongesa praised the donation, acknowledging its role in enhancing healthcare capacity for PWAs.
