NAIROBI: The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) is offering a variety of post-harvest services to farmers.
According to Kenya News Agency, the services include grain-drying, aflatoxin testing, grain grading, general warehousing, the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS), pest control, weighing, and bagging. All these services are available at competitive rates in selected depots and silos.
“NCPB is also offering grain drying services at the board’s fixed dryers located in Nairobi, Eldoret silos, Kilgoris, Nakuru, Narok, Kisumu, Moi’s Bridge, Kitale, and Bungoma,” Kimote stated. In addition, the Managing Director noted that the board has distributed over 4 million bags of subsidized fertilizer for the 2023 long rainy season, leading to a bumper harvest.
Due to poor post-harvest management practices, the country loses approximately 30 percent of its harvest each year. This not only affects farmers’ income but also has negative consequences on national food security. Kimote emphasized the need for farmers to minimize post-harvest losses and maintain food safety through the proper management of harvested produce.
