Navachab Half Marathon Boosts Prize Money for 10th Edition

Karibib—Runners participating in the upcoming 10th edition of the Navachab Half Marathon will see increased prize monies across various categories, thanks to enhanced sponsorship from QKR Namibia Navachab Gold Mine. Scheduled for September 21, 2024, this annual event in Karibib celebrates a decade of competitive running, with organizers and sponsors committing N.dollars 700,000 to elevate the event’s stature.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the race director and sports officer at the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, the prize for the male and female winners of the half marathon has been set at N.dollars 20,000 each. Additionally, the winners of the 10-kilometer race will each receive N.dollars 10,000. “The race has grown significantly since its inception in 2014, with over 800 athletes participating last year, compared to just over 200 in the first year. Credit must be given to the event’s sponsors for this growth,” Karumendu stated during the event launch. He also noted that this year’s race would feature a modified route and compliance with World Athletics rules, including six water points along the half marathon route to ensure a high standard of race conditions.

Kasale Mclyn, the Public Relations and Communications Officer at Navachab Gold Mine, emphasized the race’s role in fostering a running culture among Namibian youth and elevating the marathon to international standards. “Navachab has invested N.dollars 700,000 to not only cover the improved prize money but also to enhance event administration and attract top regional and continental athletes,” Mclyn added.

Jo-Ann Manuel, the Director of Sports, spoke on the importance of talent identification and the nurturing of young athletes for international competitions, urging Athletics Namibia to collaborate closely with event organizers to support and develop athletic talents in the region.

Registration for this year’s QKR Namibia Navachab Marathon is set to open online this week, with athletes encouraged to register through regional sports officers or the provided online link.
