National Research Fund Chairman Calls for Increased Government Investment in Research

MERU — Prof Ratemo Michieka, Chairman of the National Research Fund (NRF), has urged the government to significantly increase funding for research institutions to propel the country’s development.

According to Kenya News Agency, Speaking at the opening of the third Meru University of Science and Technology International Conference (MUSTIC), Prof Michieka emphasized the crucial role that national funding plays in supporting research institutions. “Nobody or any country can support research institutions other than the nation where such institutions are. It is therefore imperative and very important that developing nations eject more funds into the research arena to get things done for that country,” he stated. Prof Michieka highlighted the potential for research to create substantial employment opportunities, suggesting that innovations developed within these institutions could support hundreds of jobs.

Currently, the government allocates two percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to research institutions, a figure that Prof Michieka believes should be increased to achieve greater national benefits. He pointed out that developed countries invest significantly more in research, as reflected in their development indices, suggesting that Kenya could benefit from following this example.

The conference, themed ‘Science in Service of Climate Action’, addresses the pressing issues of climate change and its impacts, which have been particularly evident in the recent severe weather events affecting the country. Prof Michieka posed questions about the lessons that can be learned from these climatic conditions and discussed strategies for educating citizens on mitigating the devastating effects of climate change.

Prof Romanus Odhiambo, Vice-Chancellor of the University, also spoke at the conference, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate change scientifically and promoting resilience. He reiterated the importance of tree planting and other mitigation strategies, aligning with national policies advocated by President William Ruto, aimed at fostering a climate-sensitive approach throughout the country.
