NAIROBI: The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has announced plans to promote 186 police officers following a series of interviews and training aimed at enhancing performance in the security sector. The officers, who have completed the Higher Training Course (HTC) and Senior Training Course (STC), are set to be elevated to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, marking a significant step in their policing careers.
According to Kenya News Agency, the NPSC Chairperson, Eliud Kinuthia, outlined the commission’s efforts to inform the public about its progress and initiatives during a press briefing. Kinuthia emphasized the commission’s role in recruitment, appointments, promotions, and disciplinary control as per Article 246 of the Constitution. He further explained that the commission has delegated the promotion of officers below the rank of Superintendent of Police to the Inspector General to enhance efficiency and accountability.
The interviews for the 183 officers commenced on October 22, 2
024, and are scheduled to continue until October 29, 2024, at the Commission’s offices. The training is part of a comprehensive effort to prepare officers for leadership roles within the Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations. The courses focus on developing leadership and managerial skills essential for delivering world-class policing.
Kinuthia highlighted that the selection criteria for training are determined by NPS Promotion Boards, ensuring that candidates are nominated based on merit and service record. The training, conducted at campuses in Kiganjo and Emali, covers governance, financial management, communication skills, ethics, leadership, and other key areas.
He noted that while completing the training is a critical component, promotions are not automatic and rely on a holistic evaluation of qualifications, merit, and readiness for higher responsibilities. The commission plans to publish the names of promoted officers in the Kenya Gazette, gr
anting them authority for disciplinary processes within their jurisdiction and enhancing their prospects for senior government roles.
The announcement underscores the commission’s commitment to a transparent and merit-based promotion process, further aiming to improve the overall effectiveness of the National Police Service.
