National Committee Announces Major Progress in Resolving Amhara-Tigray Territorial Dispute

ADDIS ABABA – A significant breakthrough has been achieved in resolving the longstanding territorial dispute between the Amhara and Tigray regions, according to the National Committee responsible for mediating the conflict. The announcement was made following a committee meeting held in Addis Ababa today.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the resolution efforts, aligned with the Pretoria Agreement and the national Constitution, have successfully initiated the process to permanently settle the disputes over contested areas. A technical committee has been actively implementing a 13-point action plan aimed at resolving the conflict, with today’s meeting focusing on reviewing progress and assessing the on-ground implementation of this plan.

The statement highlighted the successful repatriation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their original homes in the Raya and Tselemt areas as a key achievement of the reconciliation process. This success was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Amhara and Tigray regional governments, the National Defense Force, and federal security institutions.

The committee praised the resilience and cooperation of the affected communities, noting their critical role in overcoming challenges and rebuilding their lives. In order to manage the newly settled areas effectively until a permanent solution is implemented, the committee has proposed the establishment of temporary local governments that involve full participation from the communities.

Emphasizing the importance of continued public support for this historic resolution, the committee called on all stakeholders to remain engaged and cooperate to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
