Luanda: The Speaker of the National Assembly, Adao de Almeida, emphasized that oversight is one of the primary challenges facing Parliament in the 4th Legislative Session for the year 2026.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the parliamentary leader made this assertion during his speech at the end-of-year ceremony. He underscored the necessity of fostering a clear and shared understanding of the concept and scope of oversight concerning the Executive Branch’s actions. Adao de Almeida noted that while there is a consensus on the significance of oversight, difficulties persist in establishing a uniform collective will on its execution within the constitutional and legal boundaries.
He stressed, “The key is to build a collective and uniform reasoning around the oversight mission, so that it is exercised appropriately, in accordance with the Constitution and the law. This is a significant challenge that we must take on.”
During the occasion, Adao de Almeida also called for continued efforts and knowledge to facilitate the coexistence of different political forces and enhance the democratic maturation process. The National Assembly, consisting of 220 deputies, is elected by universal, free, equal, direct, secret, and periodic suffrage in accordance with the Constitution and the law, serving a term of five years. The legislative session commences with the first legislative session of the National Assembly after the elections and concludes with the first session of the newly elected Assembly.
