Luanda: The new Speaker of the National Assembly (AN), Ado de Almeida, defended on Monday in Luanda the need for a strengthened and closer parliament to the citizens, with the aim to build points of convergence.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Ado de Almeida was elected unanimously during the 1st Ordinary Plenary Meeting. He emphasized the importance of Parliament aligning with the wishes of the people and ensuring that the deputies act as true representatives of Angolans.
Almeida stated, “To strengthen citizenship and bring Parliament closer to and at the service of citizens, we are no different. We are no different when it comes to increasingly defending social justice, the continuous improvement of the quality of life of Angolans and the reduction of poverty.”
The Speaker highlighted that the foundation of Parliament, its condition, and reason for existence and subsistence, lies in its ability to materially represent citizens. He urged for greater dynamism and commitment from the deputies and emphasized the need for organized and structured work from the Specialized Working Committees. This, he asserted, is essential to ensure that the National Assembly remains worthy of its mandate to represent Angolan citizens.
Ado de Almeida also commended the contributions of previous Speakers, acknowledging their efforts in affirming and strengthening democracy and the historical journey towards dignifying the Angolan Parliament.
