GAOUA — The South-West region of Burkina Faso celebrated the 6th edition of National Arbor Day (JNA) on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the regional headquarters of the national police in Gaoua, marking the commencement of the area’s reforestation campaign.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the regional director responsible for the environment, approximately 866 plants, including species such as Shea, Néré, and Kaïcédrat, are set to be planted at the site. The event, which also includes tree planting at the dozos site in Bapla, aims to encourage widespread participation and commitment to the reforestation efforts. “We invite all stakeholders to contribute to the success of this activity,” Rouamba stated.

Boureima Savadogo, the governor of the South-West region, emphasized the importance of community involvement in environmental preservation, urging residents to plant and sustain at least two trees by the end of the campaign. “The ceremony today instills hope for the restoration of plant cover and the recovery of degraded lands, which are significant current challenges,” he commented during the event. The theme for this year’s JNA, ‘Tree, capital of resilience for endogenous development,’ highlights the critical role trees play in socio-economic and cultural functions within Burkina Faso.

Chief Commissioner Fayama Hassane, representing the regional police, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of the Environment and regional authorities for their support and confidence in the police as a partner in this initiative. He also reassured the commitment to maintaining the newly planted trees.
