National Anthem: Symbol of Angola’s Identity

Luanda: The National Anthem is one of the most important symbols of Angola’s sovereignty and identity. By Francisca Augusto, ANGOP journalist, the ‘first song of the country’ solemnly and emotionally represents the history, ideals, and aspirations of the Angolan people, consolidating itself as a unifying and affirming element of the nation.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the anthem was officially adopted on November 11, 1975, the date of the proclamation of National Independence. Entitled ‘Angola Avante’, it reflects the spirit of struggle, courage, and determination that marked the Angolan people’s journey towards freedom. The lyrics, penned by Manuel Rui Monteiro, and the music, composed by Rui Mingas, express the exaltation of the homeland, the value of work, the defense of sovereignty, and the construction of a future based on unity and progress.

The National Anthem is more than a patriotic song; it is a symbol of cohesion and collective identity that inspires a sense of belonging and national pride. When sung at official ceremonies, sporting events, civic or school occasions, it reinforces the historical memory and fundamental values of the Republic of Angola-freedom, peace, solidarity, and development. Respect and appreciation for the National Anthem reflect each citizen’s commitment to the principles that guide the Angolan Nation.

It serves as a reminder of the sacrifice of the heroes who fought for independence and calls upon new generations to preserve and enhance Angola’s legacy. The National Anthem is more than a musical composition: it is the expression of the soul of the Angolan people, a testament to resistance, hope, and patriotism that continues to inspire the present and future of the country.

The anthem, commissioned by Agostinho Neto and Lºcio Lara on November 9, 1975, was first sung to the public on November 11 in Independence Square by the Gigante Choir Group. Their first official recording was made by the National Radio of Angola by members of the Gigante Choir Group. The lyrics reflect the desire to rebuild the country and create a new national identity through joint work. The bridge ‘Angola forward! / Revolution, for People’s Power!’ symbolizes the commitment to sovereignty and social justice.
