MIGORI COUNTY - Migori County Governor, Ochillo Ayacko, has addressed allegations regarding the misappropriation of funds in the county, following concerns raised in a letter to the Controller of Budget.According to Kenya New Agency, who spoke at the County official residence, the management of the budget aligns with the Public Finance Management Act. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Controller of the Budget to compile financial reports. This response comes in the wake of a letter sent in January by Migori Senator, Eddy Oketch, to the Controller of Budget. In his letter, Oketch expressed concerns about the transparency and accountability of Migori County's budget management, specifically pointing to the high and alarming figures attributed to domestic travel and subsistence allowance.
The report had sparked questions about fiscal responsibility, prompting Governor Ochilo's direct response. Ochilo clarified that the letter from Senator Oketch was intended to seek clarification and ensure the efficient allocation of financial resources for the benefit of the county.
Ochilo explained that the high figures in question, amounting to Sh 184, 611, 014 million, resulted from clustering all expenditure items together under the category of domestic travel and subsistence allowance. He stated that the Report of the Controller of the Budget did not allege any legal violations in the implementation of the county budget or misappropriation of funds.
The governor assured Migori residents that the budget was implemented lawfully and that no public funds were lost under his administration. He further explained that the office of the Controller of Budget is tasked with ensuring that county budgets comply with the Public Finance Management Act and its regulations.
Additionally, Ochilo emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in budget management. He mentioned that his administration has broken down the budget to avoid errors previously made by lumping figures together, which led to misconceptions about fund mismanagement.
Governor Ochillo Ayacko's response highlights the commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in budget management in Migori County, ensuring that public funds are appropriately used for the benefit of its residents.
