Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to press freedom, describing it as central to democracy, human rights, and national development.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that the southern African country continues to rank among the top globally in press freedom, noting that Namibia is currently placed 23rd worldwide and second in Africa. In her statement marking World Press Freedom Day, she highlighted Namibia's position as a beacon of press freedom on the African continent and globally, attributing this achievement to the nation's character and commitment to democratic values, transparency, and the rule of law.

The President stressed that with this standing comes the responsibility for the government, media, and citizens to safeguard and enhance press freedom. She pointed out the growing complexity of the global media landscape, due to rising geopolitical tensions, misinformation, and pressures on media institutions. In such an environment, she stated, the role of a free and responsible press is increasingly critical, not only in informing the public but also in preserving truth, promoting dialogue, and preventing trust erosion within societies.

Nandi-Ndaitwah also commended journalists and media practitioners for their role in promoting accountability and national dialogue. She acknowledged their dedication, courage, and integrity in informing the nation and urged adherence to ethical journalism, accuracy, and fairness.

The President reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to protecting media freedom while encouraging responsible and professional journalism. She emphasized the importance of exercising press freedom with responsibility and a deep sense of duty to the nation.
