NamWater Initiates Upgrade on Outapi Water Treatment Facility to Boost Supply in Omusati Region

WINDHOEK, Namibia — The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) has entered into a N.dollars 123 million contract with a joint venture between China Jiangxi International and Homefin Properties to expand and upgrade the Outapi Water Treatment Works. This development aims to enhance water supply capacity for the growing needs of the Omusati Region.

According to Namibia Press Agency, who spoke at the contract signing in Windhoek on Tuesday, the upgrade is crucial for maintaining a sustainable water supply in Outapi and its adjacent areas. Nehemia highlighted that the existing facility, operational since 2001, is currently strained under the increased demands of a growing urban population. "The Outapi plant is operating at its full capacity, necessitating this urgent expansion to ensure continuous and reliable water service," he stated.

The upgrade will increase the plant’s capacity to 438 cubic meters per hour, allowing it to produce potable water that meets the latest water quality standards and ensures compliant effluent treatment. Ouyang Fenfen, business manager for China Jiangxi International, committed to completing the upgrade within 16 months. He emphasized the company's long-standing presence in Namibia and its track record in constructing significant infrastructure projects, including water pipelines.

This project is part of NamWater's broader strategy to enhance water security across Namibia. Other initiatives include the N.dollars 91 million pipeline replacement between Ondangwa and Omutsegwonime and the N.dollars 250 million development of the Ohangwena aquifer, both aimed at addressing regional water challenges. Additionally, the construction of a N.dollars 665 million water purification plant in Rundu is underway, which will serve the Kavango East Region.
