NamWater Initiates Debt Recovery Effort Amid Rising Overdue Accounts

Windhoek: The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) has officially launched a nationwide initiative to recover unpaid customer debt, effective 25 March 2026. In a statement disseminated on Wednesday, the corporation noted that it has in recent times noticed a sharp increase in overdue customer accounts. The increase is inflicting pressure on NamWater's ability to sustain operations and broaden water supply to satisfy growing demand countrywide.

According to Namibia Press Agency, this intervention forms part of the corporation's ongoing efforts to strengthen financial sustainability, uphold the cost recovery model, and support continued investment in water infrastructure and service delivery across Namibia. The water supplier underscored that the campaign is more than an enforcement effort; saying it is a necessary step toward ensuring equality, accountability, and the long-term viability of water services. 'Customers who consistently meet their obligations should not be disadvantaged by those who default,' the statement stressed.

To address this, NamWater has activated a structured and time-bound collections process targeting individual customers with accounts in arrears for more than 60 days, it added. NamWater also highlighted provisions made for customers to standardise their accounts through repayment frameworks, encouraging customers to engage with NamWater to avoid service disruptions. The repayment conditions stipulate a minimum deposit of 30 per cent of the outstanding balance, with the remaining amount payable through an approved plan over no more than 12 months, in line with finance department delegations.

NamWater further implored all customers with outstanding debt to urgently settle their balances or enter into repayment agreements to avoid disruptions. Early last year, NamWater reported that it was owed around N.dollars 2.4 billion by local authorities, municipalities, town councils and individuals, among others.
