Ohangwena—NamWater has provided critical financial support to the Ohangwena Athletics Club, enabling 22 athletes to participate in the upcoming NWU Top 30 Athletics Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Teofelus Moses, the club’s spokesperson, revealed in an interview on Wednesday that NamWater’s sponsorship covers the team’s accommodation costs amounting to N$44,600. This timely support has saved the team from having to camp at a police station in Potchefstroom as they had initially planned due to budget constraints. “We were planning to camp at the police station in Potch,” Moses said, highlighting the precarious situation they were facing before the sponsorship.

The NWU Top 30 Athletics Championships, scheduled from October 10 to 12, 2024, at McArthur Stadium, is a key event for the athletes, many of whom are aiming to qualify for the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal, and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA. Moses expressed his gratitude towards NamWater for their significant contribution to sports development in Namibia, particularly in athletics. “We really want to thank NamWater for this noble gesture toward sport development in Namibia particularly athletics,” he stated.

Additionally, Moses mentioned that the Ohangwena Athletics Club also received support from other local businesses. LMH Investment CC sponsored t-shirts and Interpack Namibia provided water bottles to the team, enhancing their preparedness for the competition. The team includes athletes from the Ohangwena, Oshana, Oshikoto, and Omaheke regions.

Lot Ndamanomhata, NamWater spokesperson, affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting community initiatives through their corporate social investment (CSI) program. “Our investment in sports is rooted in our belief that sports development plays a crucial role in the holistic growth of communities and the well-being of individuals, especially the youth,” he said.
