Bangkok: Namibia's women's cricket team faced an eight-wicket defeat against Tanzania in their opening match of the ICC Women's Emerging Nations Trophy, with Tanzania achieving victory with three overs to spare.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the inaugural International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's Emerging Nations Trophy began in Thailand and features eight leading Associate Members in women's cricket. The tournament includes five nations with One Day International (ODI) status and three of the highest-ranked teams in the ICC Women's T20I Team Rankings as of the 01 May 2025 cut-off. Teams are set to compete in a single round-robin format, with the championship concluding on 30 November 2025.
In the opening match against Tanzania, Namibia's captain Sune Wittmann won the toss and opted to bat, anchoring the innings with a half-century. Wittmann's 53 runs provided the foundation for Namibia's total, while opening partner Kayleen Green contributed 20 runs. Despite these efforts, Namibia struggled to accelerate later in the innings, finishing at 118 for five. Tanzania's Mwanamvua Ushanga took two wickets, effectively limiting Namibia's scoring opportunities.
Tanzania's chase began strongly, with Saum Mtae scoring an unbeaten 55 in a crucial 63-run opening partnership with Fatuma Kibasu, who added 26 runs. Namibia briefly sparked hopes of a comeback by claiming two wickets in quick succession, but Hudaa Omary's unbeaten 28 ensured Tanzania reached their target comfortably.
Namibia now ranks sixth among the eight participating nations. The United Arab Emirates leads the standings after defeating Papua New Guinea, with Thailand in second place following their win over the Netherlands. Tanzania holds the third position, while Scotland, after defeating Uganda, is ranked fourth.
Namibia will seek to regroup swiftly as they prepare to face Uganda in their next fixture, aiming to revive their campaign and remain in contention for top honours in the tournament.
