Namibia’s President Mbumba Urges Inclusion in Economic Development on Constitution DayOnathinge Man Dies from Choking Incident

WINDHOEK — In a statement marking Namibia’s 34th Constitution Day, President Nangolo Mbumba called on Namibians to commit to inclusive economic development, ensuring no one is left behind. The national observance comes in the shadow of the recent passing of former President Hage Geingob, who played a pivotal role as the Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly and was instrumental in crafting Namibia’s constitution.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the constitution has served as a cornerstone for the country, guiding Namibia through a seamless transition following Geingob’s death on February 4, 2024.

Mbumba highlighted the country’s journey under Geingob’s leadership, recognizing him as a visionary leader who tirelessly advocated for the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the Namibian Constitution. The president underscored the significance of Constitution Day, emphasizing Namibia’s status as a peaceful, stable, and vibrant democracy admired by many nations worldwide. He commended the nation’s commitment to upholding the fundamental rights and freedoms that are vital for a peaceful, united, and prosperous Namibia.

In his message, President Mbumba reminded citizens of the ongoing work towards development and prosperity, urging them to recommit to the ideals of unity, peace, and justice for all as they commemorate Constitution Day.

ONATHINGE — A tragic event unfolded in Onathinge, Oshikoto region, on Saturday, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old Namibian man, Shilongo Nambinga, after a piece of meat became lodged in his throat.



According to Namibia Press Agency, the incident occurred around 16:00 when Nambinga and others from the village had concluded work at a neighbor’s house and gathered for refreshments.



It was during the meal, consisting of meat and porridge, that Nambinga, who was eating alone, began to show signs of distress, appearing as though he wanted to vomit. Observers quickly realized that he was choking on a piece of meat. Despite immediate concerns from those present, Nambinga collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was subsequently transported to Onandjokwe State Hospital, where a medical doctor declared him dead.



Nambinga was a resident of Onathinge North village. Following the incident, his body was moved to the mortuary at Onandjokwe State Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted. Authorities have indicated that no foul play is suspected in Nambinga’s death. The police have informed the next of kin and are conducting an investigation into the incident.
