Namibian Sports Leaders Criticized for Failing Athletes, Says Minister Tjongarero

OSHAKATI—Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, has openly criticized sports officials in Namibia for their handling of athletes’ participation in the Olympics and Paralympics. Speaking at the official opening of the third edition of the National Youth Games in Oshakati, Tjongarero highlighted the self-serving attitudes of sports leaders which, she argued, have hindered the country’s sports development.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Tjongarero expressed disappointment with the current sports management and its impact on athletes. She noted that the leaders “only think of themselves and not the athletes,” underscoring the need for significant changes in how sports are managed in Namibia. The minister called for better collaboration among the Directorate of Sport, the Namibia Sports Commission, and the Olympic and Paralympic Committees to enhance sports development across all regions and provide optimal support for the youth.

Freddy Mwiya, Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, added that the National Youth Games are crucial for scouting and nurturing talent, aiming to propel athletes toward their sporting goals. He described the event as a unique national sports occasion that unites all regions with over ten different sports codes, showcasing a large number of athletes and officials.

Oshana Governor, Elia Irimari, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the economic and social benefits of the games to the region. He pointed out the influx of visitors and participants as a boost to local businesses and job creation, enhancing the community’s overall economic health.

The games, which started on Wednesday and conclude on Sunday, are themed “The Road to Los Angeles 2028 and Beyond,” focusing on long-term sports development and excellence.
