Namibia Secures Runner-Up Position at 2024 WTPO Awards for Inclusive Trade Efforts

Windhoek—Namibia has been honored as the runner-up in the 2024 World Trade Promotion Organisation (WTPO) Awards. This accolade was presented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), recognizing the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) for its significant contributions to ensuring trade inclusivity and sustainability.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the ITC acknowledged the efforts of the NIPDB during the announcement. Namibia was praised alongside the winner, ApexBrazil, in the category for 'Best initiative to ensure that trade is inclusive and sustainable.' This year’s awards focused on innovations that support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in expanding into global markets.

NIPDB’s acting executive director of MSME development, innovation, and acceleration, Julia Muetudhana, announced in a recent notice that the awards were keen on projects fostering inclusive and sustainable commerce and addressing global developmental challenges. "This global recognition underscores Namibia’s commitment to supporting the growth of MSMEs, especially through initiatives like the Know2Grow High Potential Pool Programme," Muetudhana stated.

She elaborated that the Know2Grow programme is designed to empower export-ready MSMEs by providing essential tools, resources, and access to international market platforms. The initiative also includes training, mentorship, and opportunities to participate in global trade fairs and expos, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs on the international stage.

ITC Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton commented on the critical role of trade and investment promotion organizations in fostering long-term economic growth. "Trade promotion organizations are pivotal in helping small enterprises reach global markets. Today, we celebrate the best globally, congratulating all the winners and finalists for equipping small businesses to engage actively in trade," she remarked during the awards ceremony.

The WTPO Awards, held biennially since 2004, involve a jury of former winners led by the ITC Executive Director to select the most impactful trade promotion initiatives worldwide.
