Namibia Ports Authority Reports Rise in Non-Containerised Cargo to 7.7 Million Tonnes in 2022-2023 Financial Year

SWAKOPMUND: The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) has reported a notable increase in the volume of non-containerised cargo for the 2022-2023 financial year, marking a rise to 7,691,781 tonnes from the 6,576,370 tonnes recorded in the previous financial year.

According to a new release by Namibia Press Agency, the increase was also supported by heightened activities in export and import container volumes, as well as in the petroleum products sector. Kanime made these remarks during a recent annual port users dinner.

Kanime attributed the increase in volume to expanded operations in hinterland markets, particularly Botswana and Zambia, along with favorable market conditions for various commodities including coal, fish, meat, poultry, marble, equipment, and machinery. These conditions led to increased production by producers and, consequently, improved port performance.

The CEO also stated that the higher volumes were sustained by more stable vessel calls and container availability, facilitating the efficient movement of goods to various destination markets.

Amid the complex global backdrop affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict, Kanime noted that Namport’s positive performance throughout the year illustrates the company’s commitment to adapting to these challenges. He underscored the increasing role of maritime logistics in global trade and development.

However, Kanime also touched upon challenges faced by Namport’s ship repair subsidiary, Namdock. While revenue saw a marked increase, operating profit significantly decreased due to rising operational costs.

Despite these challenges, Kanime confirmed that investments in terminals, cargo-handling equipment, human resources, and support systems continued throughout the year. “Our strategic expansion into new regional hinterland markets yielded positive results, while increased demand for raw materials and finished goods created new avenues for growth,” he said.
