Namibia Mourns Former President Geingob with Global Leaders in Attendance

WINDHOEK, Namibia — Thousands of Namibians and international dignitaries convened at Windhoek’s national stadium on Saturday for the memorial service of Namibia’s third President, Dr. Hage Geingob, who passed away three weeks prior. The service, held at Independence Stadium, drew close to 20 heads of state and government officials from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas, reflecting the global respect and admiration for the former leader.

According to Namibia Press Agency, who presided over the service, the extensive international presence served as a significant source of consolation and strength during this period of national mourning. Geingob’s tenure as president, beginning in 2015, was marked by his commitment to the nation until his passing in a Windhoek hospital on February 4, 2024.

Namibia’s current President, Nangolo Mbumba, Geingob’s former deputy, was among the mourners at the crowded stadium. The day before the memorial service, Geingob’s casket was paraded through Windhoek, allowing residents to pay their respects to the national hero.

The late President Geingob is to be laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, in a ceremony that honors his legacy and contribution to the nation’s history.
