WINDHOEK — The final farewell for Namibia’s third President, Dr. Hage Geingob, is currently taking place with his burial at Heroes’ Acre, located just outside the capital city, Windhoek. A significant assembly of mourners, including high-ranking officials, military personnel, and international dignitaries, have gathered to pay their last respects to the leader, whose tenure marked a pivotal period in the nation’s history.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the ceremony features military honors, including a 21-gun salute by the Namibian Defence Force, highlighting the nation’s deep respect and gratitude for Geingob’s service. The late President’s contributions are being commemorated with his interment in a specially constructed mausoleum at the national shrine, symbolizing his lasting impact on the country.
The burial event attracts hundreds of attendees, signifying the collective mourning and celebration of Geingob’s life and legacy. He holds the distinction of being the first Head of State to pass away while in office since Namibia gained independence 33 years ago, underscoring the historical significance of his leadership.
During the preceding memorial service at the national stadium, President Nangolo Mbumba led tributes to Geingob, reflecting on his vision and dedication to the nation. The memorial services, which extended across all 14 regions of Namibia, culminated in this national ceremony, illustrating the widespread admiration for Geingob’s contributions.
The late President’s struggle with cancer, revealed by his widow Monica Geingos during the memorial, adds a personal dimension to the national grief. Geingob’s passing on February 4, 2024, at the age of 82, came after a brief battle with the illness, marking the end of a significant chapter in Namibian history.
The presence of 18 Heads of State and Government, including notable figures from across Africa and beyond, at the main memorial service underscores the respect Geingob commanded on both a regional and international level. The assembly of leaders from Angola, Zambia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Germany, and Mozambique reflects the broad impact of his leadership and the solidarity of the international community with Namibia during this period of mourning.
