Nakuru Initiates Major Sanitation Overhaul to Enhance Urban Living

Nakuru, Kenya — In a major step towards revamping its sanitation systems, Nakuru City has announced a new initiative aimed at dramatically improving hygiene and cleanliness for its residents. The move comes as part of a collaborative effort with Agua Consultant and UNICEF, which was highlighted during a recent meeting with Nakuru City Manager Gitau Thabanja.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Agua Consultant team will evaluate current sanitation conditions, pinpoint deficiencies, and develop strategic interventions to streamline waste management processes. This initiative is designed to restore Nakuru’s status as one of the cleanest cities in East Africa. Thabanja expressed his department’s commitment to enhancing on-site sanitation safety and aligning with Governor Susan Kihika’s goals for sustainable urban growth.

The involvement of NAWASSCO in the project underscores a united approach to tackling the persistent sanitation challenges faced by the city. These efforts are intended to provide a safer and healthier living environment, contributing to the well-being and prosperity of all city residents.

Thabanja also pointed out ongoing issues such as dust problems during dry seasons and flooding in rainy periods. He noted that recent improvements in drainage systems have significantly mitigated flood risks, particularly in lower-lying areas of the city. Despite these advancements, managing sanitation and garbage remains a difficult task for many local governments, compounded by growing populations and widespread reluctance to cooperate in communal cleanliness efforts.
